The Katara Cultural Village Foundation announced that it had received 1,105 poems for the 7th edition of the Katara Prophet Poet Prize, marking an increase of 22% compared to the previous edition which recorded 861 applications.
In total, 1,015 male and 90 female applications were submitted this year, indicates the foundation in a press release, specifying that the classic poetry category has 982 poems, including 897 written by men and 85 by women, while that of Nabati poetry brings together 123 poems, with 118 male and 5 female contributions.
Regarding the distribution by country, Egypt, Sudan and Somalia come first with 347 candidate poems, followed by the countries of the Middle East and Iraq (255 poems), the Maghreb (247 poems), the countries of Gulf (224 poems) and finally 32 poems from non-Arab countries. Gulf countries occupy the first place in the Nabati poetry category with 90 poems and contribute with 134 poems in the classical poetry category.
Launched from September 1 to December 31, 2024, the 7th edition of the Katara Prize for the poet of the Prophet takes place in several stages, starting with the selection of 30 candidates (15 in the category of classical poetry and 15 in that of nabati poetry) , who are qualified for the final stages after completing three stages.
Among them, five poets from each category advance to the semi-finals and, during the final, three winners are chosen in each category. The total prize pool is QAR 3.8 million in the classical and Nabati poetry categories, with awards of QAR 1 million for first place winners in each category, QAR 600,000 for second place and QAR 300,000 for third place. .
The organizing committee will be responsible for publishing a collection bringing together the 30 best poems from the competition, in this case 15 works of classical poetry and as many Nabati poetry.
