The forced departure of French troops stationed in French-speaking Africa since the colonial period marks the end of an era. This incredible saga is told in the book Requiem for “the Colonial”*, signed by journalists Jean de la Guérivière and Stephen Smith. The latter, who teaches African studies at Duke University in the United States, answers our questions.
