Ousmane Sonko in Mauritania: Energy cooperation at the heart

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko will be in Mauritania for a three-day official visit focused on work and friendship. This strategic meeting takes place in a decisive context, marked by the recent announcement of the start of gas production as part of the first phase of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) cross-border field, located between the two countries.

On the agenda for discussions: the second phase of development of this mega-gas project, currently in negotiations with the main partners, BP and Kosmos Energy. Both parties aim to overcome remaining technical and financial challenges to quickly launch this crucial phase, which is expected to triple the field’s annual production capacity. A success which would allow us to go from the current 2.3 million tonnes to 10 million tonnes per year, thus consolidating the position of Mauritania and Senegal as key players on the global energy scene. This visit is of strategic importance, not only for the future of the GTA project, but also to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties between the two nations. It also illustrates the common desire to maximize the economic and social benefits of this natural resource, while ensuring responsible and sustainable management. Beyond energy issues, this cooperation marks a new era of partnership between Mauritania and Senegal, promising major economic prospects for the two countries and the entire West African sub-region. A meeting which, without a doubt, will be closely followed by economic and political observers.
