Morocco is on the way to becoming the king of peppers in Europe, with significant import figures. Fresh pepper transactions with Spain reveal significant growth, with Madrid paying almost 100 million euros for Moroccan peppers.

According to the latest data reported by Hortoinfo, the dynamics of the pepper market in Morocco is showing exceptional performance. With an import volume reaching 80.67 million kilos between January 1 and October 31, 2024, Morocco experienced an increase of 59.5% compared to the last five years. This figure represents 91.95% of all peppers imported by Spain over the period, which demonstrates that the Kingdom has a leading position in this market.

Furthermore, the specialized site revealed that the Spanish importers injected nearly 97.71 million euros to obtain these Moroccan peppers, at an average price of 1.21 euros/kg, thus surpassing the price of 1.07 euros/kg charged by Andalusian producers. The growth of Moroccan exports therefore translates into a favorable positioning on the European market, despite regional competition.

The Hortoinfo report, based on Estacom statistics, also highlights the overall increase in total pepper imports into Spain, which reached 87.73 million kilos, an increase of 62.6% compared to to 2020. The value of total imports into Spain for the first ten months of 2024 amounts to 110.3 million euros, with an average price of 1.26 euro/kg.

In comparison, Portugal ranks second among Spanish suppliers, but with less overwhelming figures. This country only supplied 2.4 million kilos, representing only 2.73% of the total market, for an amount of 4.27 million euros, at an average price of 1.78 euros/kg. Other countries such as (3rd), Belgium (4th), and the Netherlands (5th), alongside Germany, Italy, Poland, Hungary and Honduras, are also part of the list of 10 suppliers to Spain, but with significantly lower volumes, thus confirming Moroccan dominance in the supply of fresh peppers.
