a tram accident in a tunnel leaves 68 injured, according to a final report

A tram accident took place in the tunnel of the station (Bas-Rhin) and left 68 injured, indicated a final report communicated by the prefecture this Sunday.

A new drama in Strasbourg. This Saturday, January 11, an accident between two trams occurred in the station tunnel of the town of Bas-Rhin. The incident left 68 injured, according to the final report communicated by the prefecture. Around a hundred people escaped unhurt

The two trams collided head-on. Shortly after 4 p.m., a tram on the platform at the underground stop at Strasbourg station was violently hit from the front by the tram in front of it. The first, who had to stop before the next station due to a traffic jam on the tracks, went back for a reason still unknown, and rolled down the slope leading to the station.

The victims presented injuries relating to trauma, “wounds to the scalp, one or two fractures of the clavicle, a sprained knee”, detailed this Saturday the director of the Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service, René Cellar.

The hypothesis of a voluntary act has been ruled out

Alexandre Chevrier, interim public prosecutor of Strasbourg, announced that an investigation has been opened for “unintentional injuries”. The first investigations have already made it possible to rule out the hypothesis of a voluntary act.

Patrick Maciejewski, president of the Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois (CTS), spoke of a possible technical problem or human error. He specified that the tram would have reversed in an uncontrolled manner from the Les Halles stop before colliding with the stationary train.

The prosecution announced that it had opened an investigation into unintentional injuries, which aims to “determine the causes of the accident and highlight possible criminal responsibilities”. For the moment, tram traffic at Strasbourg station has been interrupted and will not resume for several days, indicated the Strasbourg Transport Company.
