Mayotte on red cyclone alert: the archipelago faces tropical storm Dikeledi, less than a month after the devastating cyclone Chido

A new meteorological wave is hitting Mayotte, while residents are struggling to recover from tropical cyclone Chido.

It is Dikeledi, a tropical storm, which threatens the archipelago this Sunday, January 12. A red cyclone alert was activated from Saturday January 11 from 10:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. time).

“I have decided to bring forward this red alert to 10 p.m. to allow everyone to take shelter, to confine themselves well, to take care of the people close to you, your children, your families, vulnerable people, grandparents, mothers who are isolated, to ensure that everyone can be protected in this upcoming period,” declared the prefect of Mayotte François-Xavier Bieuville, interviewed on Mayotte La 1ère.

“Cyclone Dikeledi, downgraded to the moderate tropical storm stage, is accompanied by heavy rains forecast throughout the day,” the television channel said this Sunday morning, specifying that the bad weather could cause flooding as well as landslides. ground.

During the night from Saturday to Sunday, the Mahorais, who took this new threat seriously, took refuge in accommodation centers. “The wind and rain have been coming in fits and starts since 6 a.m., and their intensity is gradually increasing after a particularly rainy night,” it is underlined.

The first damage was reported, involving the tarpaulins with which some residents had covered the roofs of their houses. They didn’t resist.
