A day for a century of presence in France and a history common to many Gersois. Extract from the family booklet: the Marconatos.

1924-2024. One hundred years of history and exodus. Recently, it was in their pretty stronghold in the village of Solomiac, the true cradle of siblings, that the Marconato family gathered. No fewer than 160 descendants made the trip to celebrate the centenary of the family’s arrival in France, and in Gers in particular. A story which, inevitably, will speak to many of us too.

After the First World War (1914-1918), the South-West countryside was emptied of its peasants, most of whom died on the field of honor, in combat, and in various battles. The French government then called on foreign labor. The crisis in Italy and the rise of fascism encouraged many inhabitants of La Botte to join France.

This is how in 1924, Luigi Marconato, and his entire family, made the journey. They arrive by train in Beaumont-de-Lomagne, to be installed at the Château de La Ponchude farm, a large property of the time. He is accompanied by his wife Maria and all his children: César, already married to Piérina and their newborn, Erino, Auzélio, Narcisse, Fiorindo, Amélia, Virginia, Albina, Aldo, Rita. In the 1930s, Luigi’s nephews came: Almérino, son of Carlo Fortunato and Alféo, son of Piétro. Antoine, who came from in 1920, settled in Lauragais. This is how the Marconatos founded homes in the South-West.

The reunion, marked by a lot of emotion, solidarity, and respect, was a great moment, between conviviality and remembrance, with the presence of local elected officials including Guy Mantovani, mayor of Solomiac, Philippe Dupouy, president of the departmental council and David Taupiac, deputy for the 2nd constituency. A beautiful family reunion which marks the essential duty of memory of the Italian pioneers.
