Tarik Sektioui’s first list for CHAN

The Atlas Lions are preparing for CHAN 2024 with a bold strategy. Tarik Sektioui unveiled a first list of 30 players born in 2000 or later, emphasizing the talent of his training.

The Atlas Lions are preparing to take on a new challenge. As we approach the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025, which will take place from February 1 to 28 between Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, coach Tarik Sektioui has revealed an intriguing list. And for good reason: this time, Morocco has decided to field a team composed only of players born in 2000 or later, an unprecedented strategy imposed by the Royal Moroccan Federation (FRMF).

While the Morocco is aiming for a third coronation in this competition, after the victories of 2018 and 2021, a closed training course has been scheduled from January 12 to 15 at the Mohammed VI Football Center in Rabat. This gathering will allow this “U24” selection to refine his automatisms before a planned departure to Tanzania later in the month. Walid Regragui, the coach of the A team, also played a key role in this preparation.

A bet on youth

The decision to only include players born in 2000 or later represents a real turning point. Exit the experienced executives of previous coronations. This bold choice aims to provide a showcase for local talent under the age of 24, while preparing the next generation of the Atlas Lions. The 30 players therefore all play in Botola clubs and were born after December 31, 1999.

Between 18 and 24 years old, they come exclusively from the national championship, excluding clubs currently involved in CAF interclub competitions such as AS FAR Rabat, Raja Casablanca or the Berkane Renaissance. Among them, we find Rachid Ghanimi, already called up to A (without playing) and who was part of the group for the 2024 Olympic Games, just like Mohammed Reda Asmama and El Mehdi El Moubarik, who had been deprived of the bronze medalfailure to appear on the match sheet.

The drawscheduled for January 15 in Nairobi, will give the symbolic kickoff of this CHAN, where Morocco hopes to shine with this generation full of promise.
