In a concept note titled “Electric mobility, a strategic lever for Africa, Morocco and beyond Europe”the International Institute of Geopolitical Studies (IIEG), based in Montpellier, highlights the central role of Morocco in the global energy transition. Driven by the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Kingdom has established itself as a model to follow, thanks to strategic reforms and an innovative ecosystem.
The IIEG note highlights the importance of Morocco’s modern energy infrastructure, such as the Noor Ouarzazate solar power plant and the Tarfaya and Jbel Lahdid wind farms. These installations allow the country to produce clean and competitive energy, a key element for developing sustainable electric mobility.
The study also highlights the Kingdom’s efforts to integrate these resources into a coherent industrial framework, supporting ambitious projects such as smart cities and urban connectivity solutions.
Reforms and innovations serving the energy transition
According to the note, Morocco has modernized its energy policies through structuring reforms, in particular via the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE). These advances help create an environment conducive to the adoption of new technologies and collaboration between public and private actors.
Moroccan smart cities also serve as laboratories to test innovative solutions, such as the integration of fintech and intelligent surveillance systems, which strengthen sustainable and connected mobility.
An attractive environment for international investors
In 2024, Morocco attracted significant foreign direct investment, particularly in the battery sector for electric vehicles. Its strategic position as a gateway to Africa, combined with its institutional stability and resilient economic framework, makes the Kingdom a preferred partner for major industrial projects.
A vision for sustainable and inclusive development
The IIEG also welcomes Moroccan efforts to develop local skills in the fields of renewable energy, storage and electric mobility. These initiatives promote the emergence of a qualified workforce capable of supporting this energy transformation.
The note concludes that Morocco, thanks to its ambitious industrial strategy and innovative projects such as research on Lithium-Iron-Phosphate batteries, demonstrates that it is possible to combine innovation, sustainability and accessibility. The Kingdom is thus establishing itself as a key player in electric mobility in Africa and beyond.
