Sédhiou, Jan 11 (APS) – One hundred and fifteen confirmed cases of hydrocele were treated during a two-day free surgery camp, organized at the Sédhiou regional hospital center, Amadou Tidiane Ba, to facilitate access to care of people suffering from this disease, indicated its director, Ousmane Seck Dame.
Organized in collaboration with the National Program for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis of the Ministry of Health and Social Action, this camp made it possible to consult, on Thursday and Friday, around 460 patients, including 115 confirmed cases taken care of, said the director of the Sédhiou regional hospital center.
»Confirmed sick cases are fully supported in this surgical camp. And beyond this camp, their care will continue until the end of this month. Through this initiative, we want to reach as many people as possible suffering from lymphatic filariasis,” he added.
Ousmane Seck Dame considered that this initiative is an important step towards a healthier future for the inhabitants of Sédhiou and shows the commitment of health authorities to combat neglected tropical diseases.
Gayo Sy, coordinator of the National Program for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis and Onchocerciasis, praised the organization of this free surgery camp, initiated to treat cases of hydrocele linked to lymphatic filariasis.
“This initiative aims to improve the management of cases of hydrocele and reduce the morbidity associated with this disabling disease,” he indicated, specifying that the fight against “lymphatic filariasis is a long process, involving the research and identification of cases within households for appropriate care”.
-He said the disease, transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito, is often associated with malaria endemic areas and can be difficult to diagnose in its early stages.
“Adults, adolescents and young people aged 18 to 20 are most frequently affected by this disease, although cases in children aged 7 to 8 have also been diagnosed,” he added.
Mr. Sy recalled that the main objective of this program is to eliminate diseases linked to lymphatic filariasis in three stages, notably, interrupting transmission, managing the vector and treating cases of morbidity linked to the disease.
A hydrocele is a buildup of fluid in the vaginalis, the sac surrounding the testicles. It can be benign or pathological, and requires surgery to treat it.
