Between January and October 2024, the tomato market in the European Union (EU) recorded notable fluctuations, marked by a drop in sales from the main suppliers, to the benefit of a fast-rising Morocco.
With 2,381.33 million kilos imported, for a total value of 4,030.92 million euros, the EU market benefits from an average price of 1.69 euros per kilo. In this context, Morocco, with a selling price of 1.82 euros/kg, positions itself as a key player, displaying good growth dynamics.
According to a Hortoinfo report, the last ten years have seen tomato sales from the two largest suppliers, the Netherlands and Spain, decline by 14.76% and 12.87% respectively compared to 2015. On the other hand, imports of tomatoes from Morocco jumped by 72.71% during the same period.
In total, during the first 10 months of 2024, EU member states purchased 2,381.33 million kilos of tomatoes, marking a slight increase of 2.52% compared to the same months of 2015. this total volume, Moroccan products represented 17.63%, equivalent to 419.87 million kilos, reflecting a rise in power on Community markets.
The hierarchy of suppliers is clearly emerging. The Netherlands remains the leading supplier with 638.49 million kilos (26.81%), while Spain follows with 460.38 million kilos (19.33%). However, due to their respective declines, Morocco is getting closer to these figures, displaying dynamics that could redefine the contours of the market.
-Indeed, the financial results reinforce this assertion. Between January and October 2024, Morocco recorded sales totaling 764.76 million euros in EU markets, with an average price of 1.82 euros per kilo, the highest price among the three main countries suppliers.
In this competition, Turkey also asserts itself as a notable supplier with 168.43 million kilos (7.07%), while France and Belgium follow respectively with 145.37 million kilos and 132.37 million kilos. kilos, reflecting a less significant market share but nevertheless essential for the balance of the whole, indicates the same source.
Thus, Morocco seems well positioned to strengthen its market share and consolidate itself as an essential pillar of the supply of tomatoes on the old continent.
