Former European Commissioner Thierry Breton declared this Thursday, January 9, that interference by Elon Musk in the upcoming elections in Germany could lead to an annulment of the election results.
An interference which increasingly worries European leaders. While the results of the first round of the Romanian presidential election were canceled against a backdrop of Russian interference, the threat of intervention by Elon Musk in favor of the AfD in Germany raises fears of the worst.
This is what Thierry Breton, former European Commissioner, spoke about on RMC. “Freedom of speech is a fundamental element in Europe,” he recalled, while the boss of X will host an exchange with the far-right leader on his social network.
Thierry Breton, however, called for people to remain calm in the face of this situation which is developing in Germany, citing the example of Romania. “Let us enforce our laws in Europe when they risk being circumvented and when they can, if we do not apply them, lead to interference. We did it in Romania and it will obviously have to be done, if necessary, in Germany,” he concluded.
Elon Musk must submit to European rules
The one who was one of the pioneers of the regulation of social networks in Europe was also firm on this promotion of the AFD by the American billionaire and future member of the Trump administration.
“From the moment it is broadcast in Europe with a regulated platform, Elon Musk must follow European rules. With the AfD, you have to follow them. It is obvious that we will take all measures to ensure that he respects the law. If he does not respect it, there are fines and the possibility of banning,” he continued with our colleagues, recalling that Elon Musk had to submit to European rules.
