Driving a thousand kilometers by car will cost 40 francs more in 2025 than in 2024. This is the gloomy picture presented this Thursday by the Touring Club Suisse (TCS) in its annual calculation of mileage costs. This year, according to him, per kilometer will cost 76 cents, compared to 72 last year, an increase of 4 cents (or 5.5%). For comparison, in 2022 it was 71 cents.
To understand how the TCS does its accounts, you have to imagine that you buy a new vehicle, whose lifespan is estimated at ten years, and that you drive it on average 15,000 km per year. This purchase generates fixed costs (depreciation, taxes and insurance, parking, etc.) and variable costs (possible repairs, fuel, etc.). By adding up all these costs, we arrive, according to the TCS, at a total of 11,337 francs in annual cost. And by dividing it by 15,000, we obtain the famous costs per kilometer.
In the big cheese of cost distribution, vehicle depreciation takes first place (27%). And it is precisely because of him that costs will increase so much in 2025. According to the TCS, a typical new vehicle will sell on average for 44,000 francs this year, compared to 41,000 in 2024.
“One of the key factors in this increase is the legal obligation to install certain driver assistance systems, in force since July 7, 2024, which considerably increases vehicle production costs,” specifies the TCS. . But garage and maintenance costs have also increased.
Please note that the calculation of the TCS is a purely indicative calculation. It can allow employers or individuals to have an idea of the costs incurred when making their car available to others. But there is no question of basing your tax deductions on this figure, for example. For comparison, a general adult CFF season ticket in 2nd class costs its user 3,995 francs. But according to the Federal Office, it would be double if public transport were not largely supported by the state.
