“This drift is incompatible with our values”: why the Department of Ille-et-Vilaine will leave the social network

The leak continues. After the -Atlantique department on Wednesday, it was the president of the departmental council Jean-Luc Chenut who announced his departure from the social network X this Thursday, January 9. The community’s accounts on the platform will be deleted at the end of the month.

“The social network has today reached a level of toxicity which is no longer acceptable: total absence of moderation, proliferation of hateful and violent speech, algorithmic promotion of extremist and climate-sceptical content, conspiracy”, denounces the president of the council departmental in a press release. “Moderated speeches are systematically made invisible by the algorithm. This drift is incompatible with the values ​​of the Department of Ille-et-Vilaine.”

Disinformation

Bought by American billionaire Elon Musk in 2022, the platform formerly known as Twitter is regularly accused of spreading disinformation. In recent months, many personalities and organizations have left the network.

“The Department and its President will continue to address Bretillians and promote appeasement, respectful exchange and debate so essential to the vitality of our democracy via the media and other social networks (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook),” specifies Jean-Luc Chenut.
