Traffic lights, ocular prosthetics… The most unusual objects spotted at the 2024 Lille Braderie

On Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, the great Braderie de Lille allowed many sellers to present their goods to bargain hunters. Along the streets, some objects hit the mark, others even caused confusion among passers-by.

The Braderie de Lille, a cabinet of curiosities? In the streets of the city, on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, bargain hunters took advantage of the hundreds of stands exhibited in the four corners of the city to unearth the rare pearl.

During their visit, they got their hands on trinkets, dishes, books, clothes and even jewelry.

Ocular prostheses

Nothing surprising so far, except that some sellers have reserved a few surprises by taking out of their cupboards some rather unexpected objects.

This is the case of René’s stand, which sells an old stock of ocular prostheses while wearing an outfit as original as his objects. Many curious onlookers stopped in front of this pile of glass eyes made between 1900 and 1960.

“It’s quite rare to find this kind of product,” says a bargain hunter, who hesitates to buy one of the models presented, to BFM Grand Lille. “It’s the first time I’ve seen a stand like this, it caught my eye,” adds another visitor.

“People buy them as a curiosity or I sell a lot of them to artists who include them in their works of art (…) I am the only one in France to sell them,” explains the seller.

A few sidewalks further, an exhibitor is selling mussels that she has transformed into magnets. “I had a lot of fun doing that,” she says, amused.

It is also the presence of a thousand Playmobils that attracts the attention of bargain hunters. Most of them fall back into childhood when faced with these famous little pieces carefully installed.

For others, surprise is mixed with admiration when faced with beautiful sculptures like this majestic horse made of exotic wood sold on Boulevard de la Liberté. Made by a designer, it measures more than 2m high. Be careful, to be able to acquire this rare piece, the sale price (before negotiation) was 2,500 euros. It is still on sale this Sunday at midday.

Vintage objects are also popular during the Lille flea market, such as this camera that is certainly a century old.

At another stand, Clément put up for sale, for 300 euros, a gramophone dating from the early 1900s. “I bought it from individuals who were parting with them in Belgium,” he explains.

References to several characters well-known to children were also on sale, including a Snow White accompanied by her seven dwarves, or a Mickey face placed on the ground.

Among the objects on sale, visitors were also able to come across this armoured leg, presumably to be attached to the horse’s saddle, or a collection of traffic lights, clearly no longer in working order.

Perplexity and fear

From one stand to another, the reactions were not the same. While wonder and intrigue were common, perplexity sometimes took over.

Sometimes terrifying sculptures such as that of a sort of animal with sharp teeth as well as dolls without arms or legs were also offered for sale.

There are now only a few hours left for bargain hunters to find the rare gem. The sale closes at 6 p.m. this Sunday.
