One of the smallest prefectures in France had gone through a long period of population decline. “This increase marks a significant turning point in the history of the municipality,” underlines the City of Foix, on social networks.

The municipality indicates that it has made improving the living environment a priority:

“This work has made it possible to meet the expectations of residents, but also to attract new arrivals who now choose Foix for its quality of life. »

Foix also explains having strengthened its tourist attractiveness. “Its rich heritage with the castle, its exceptional landscapes and its proximity to the mountains make it a privileged destination for visitors,” continues the municipality. “This combination of tourist attractiveness and economic dynamism is an important driver for the evolution of the population. »

At the regional level, Occitanie should soon become the third region of France. It now has more than 6 million inhabitants. The population is almost stable in Lozère (76,503) and in Aveyron (279,736). It is progressing moderately in Gers (192,649), Lot (175,620), Ariège (155,339) and Hautes-Pyrénées (231,453): + 0.2% to + 0.3% per year. And more significantly in Tarn (396,168), Aude (377,773), Gard (764,010), Tarn-et-Garonne (264,924) and Pyrénées-Orientales (492,964): from + 0, 4% to +0.6% per year.

Toulouse and Montpellier

On the city side, the region is boosted by Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) et Montpellier (Hérault). While the population is declining in Paris and growing slowly in Marseille and Lyon, it is still increasing significantly in Toulouse (+ 1.2% per year between 2016 and 2022, as between 2011 and 2016), which remains the fourth city in France with 511 684 inhabitants as of January 1, 2022. The increase is even stronger on Montpellier (+ 1.5% per year), seventh municipality in France with 307,101 inhabitants.
