Since their meeting on November 29, the president-elect has been messing around with the Prime Minister of Canada, and the news of his departure has allowed him to add more.
“The United States can no longer endure the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat,” Donald Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social.
“Justin Trudeau knew it and resigned,” he continued. If Canada merged with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would go down significantly, and they would be TOTALLY safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great nation it would be!!!”
Repeatedly
Since Justin Trudeau’s dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, these comments from Donald Trump have been repeated.
If during this evening the American president-elect had first suggested that Canada become the 51e State of the United States, Mr. Trump also reportedly suggested that Mr. Trudeau could become its governor.
The federal Liberals then tried to minimize this “quip” by the president-elect.
-Former Quebec Premier Jean Charest said he found the comment “insulting” to Canadians.
On December 18, Donald Trump returned to the charge by writing that several Canadians want Canada to become the 51e American state.
Not very popular
According to a Léger poll, 13% of Canadians would like Canada to become 51e State of the United States, while 82% say the opposite.
This web survey was conducted among 1,520 Canadians from December 6 to 9, 2024.
Despite the announcement of Justin Trudeau’s departure, the latter will still be in office when Trump officially takes control of the White House on January 20.
For his part, the businessman and future American Minister of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk, estimated that the year 2025 “is looking[çait] good” after sharing a message echoing several events, including Trudeau’s resignation, Trump’s re-election and the supposed return of masculinity.
More moderate, the White House spokesperson declared Monday that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had been a “faithful friend of the United States.”
“During the decade he spent at the head of the Canadian government, we worked closely together,” she added, declaring that outgoing President Joe Biden was “grateful” for this cooperation.
