Maternal mortality rate falls by 70% in 20 years

The maternal mortality rate has recorded a drop of 70% over the last two decades, Minister of Health and Social Protection Amine Tahraoui said on Monday in the House of Representatives.

This rate increased from 244 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2000 to 72 deaths in 2020, “thanks to the efforts made by Morocco in terms of medical supervision, particularly in gynecology-obstetrics”, underlined Mr. Tahraoui, in response to an oral question addressed by the Authenticity and Modernity group.

As part of the consolidation of these achievements, the ministry is redoubling its efforts to ensure adequate medical supervision in this area, indicated the government official.

To this end, he noted that positions are open to train specialist doctors on a contractual basis, through residency competitions organized annually.

Mr. Tahraoui also expressed the ministry’s commitment to strengthening public hospitals every year, by equipping them with various vital specialties, with the aim of guaranteeing the continuity of health services and guaranteeing the right to quality care. .
