update on the violent winds affecting Belgium

Violent winds are blowing across part of Belgium on Monday, while heavy rains also threaten certain rivers with flooding.

Gusts between 80 and 95 kilometers/houror even locally a little more, as well as showers were expected on Monday afternoon, according to midday forecasts from the Royal Meteorological Institute (MRI).

The Federal Public Service (FPS) Interior has activated the number 1722 for risk of storm or flooding while the IRM has issued a wind alert until 6:00 p.m. and a rain alert until 7:00 p.m. Citizens are invited to dial the number 1722 dedicated to non-urgent interventions by firefighters in the event of damage caused by the storm or water damage.

In addition to this special number, the public service recommends to the population to submit a request for assistance via the electronic counter (1722.be), the latter being “the most direct way to request assistance from firefighters in situations in which no lives are in danger”. The number 112 should only be used in the event of an emergency, insists the FPS Interior.

Place De Brouckère closed

The Place De Brouckère and one part of Anspach Boulevard were closed on Monday as a safety measure as violent winds blew across part of Belgium, Brussels police said.

Of the wooden panels fell from a construction site at Place De Brouckère onto the public highway and other signs threaten to fall as well. The police therefore set up a security perimeter at the request of the firefighters.

Flood pre-alert

A Regional Expertise Unit was summoned following the heavy rain fallen in the last 24 hours Wallonia, also announces the SPW.

A flood alert on the Senne and its tributaries was thus issued Sunday evening and is maintained until further notice. However, a decreasing trend is expected in the coming hours.

Other rivers and tributaries are currently in pre-alert phase. It is about the Scheldtof the lower Ourthe and its tributaries, l’Amblève and its tributaries, Mehaigne and its tributaries, Basse Lesse and its tributaries, Viroin and its tributaries, Chiers and its tributaries, Haute Semois and its tributaries, and, finally, the Should and its tributaries. The levels of these could continue to increase gradually without exceeding the alert thresholds, notes the Expertise Unit.

The vigilance is required on all watercourses. A reassessment of the situation will be carried out according to weather conditions.

Regarding the Eastern dams (Eupen, Gileppe), the potting reserves make it possible to absorb the rain. HAS the West (Ry de Rome and Eau d’Heure), the potting reserves are comfortable. The same goes for the Bütgenbach and Robertville dams.
