New Year gifts are a tradition dating back to Roman times. It was then customary to cut branches which were sent to kings at the beginning of the year. Over time, the gifts turned into money and chocolate to thank certain people such as janitors, postmen or even firefighters.

Firefighters from Haute-Garonne are preparing to leave, not for an intervention but to collect the gifts. Thanks to the distribution of their calendars, they were able to print 3,500 copies. In exchange, each resident is free to give what they want according to their means. A retiree does not hesitate to give 50 euros to show her gratitude. “There was a fire at my son’s house and luckily they were there”she says.

A few kilometers away, New Years are also a ritual for a couple. At home, the firefighters are welcomed with open arms, there is no question of leaving without a coffee and a slice of sausage.

The tradition of New Year gifts dates back to the Middle Ages and continues for many French people. Gifts that can also take a form other than money, like a box of chocolates, for example. No matter the gift, the important thing is to please.
