Interns and residents suspend national strikes

Resident and intern doctors and pharmacists announced on Sunday the suspension of all of their national mobilizations, including repeated strikes for a year and the sit-in initially planned for January 8, 2025. This decision was taken “after a in-depth study of the current situation, as well as the need to preserve the health of citizens and ensure the continuity of services,” said a press release from the National Commission of Interns and Residents (CNIR).

According to the same source, this initiative is part of the body’s vision to “strengthen the training of resident and intern doctors, pharmacists and dentists”. At the same time, the CNIR called on local coordinations to “hold general assemblies in order to discuss this decision in detail and formulate a common vision to move forward in the next stage”.

Tuesday December 31, 2024 and Thursday January 2, 2025, the CNIR has already led national strikes, with demands relating to the financial and academic aspects, in favor of strengthening training. In this context, interns and residents of the Ibn Sina University Hospital Center (CHU) in Rabat pointed to the closure and demolition of the medical biology laboratories, without temporary transfer while awaiting the opening of the new hospital under construction.

Without confirming whether the suspension of strikes comes after negotiations with the supervisory ministry, the CNIR said it was now “convinced” that the future would hold “more possibilities” to achieve its objectives. In this sense, she affirmed her “firm commitment” to continue to defend the rights of interns and residents, as well as their demands.

Furthermore, the CNIR assured that it would continue to raise its demands and remain “open to all peaceful and civilized means to achieve a fairer and more equitable health system”.
