Ten years of the Charlie Hebdo attacks: previously unpublished press cartoons are on display at the Pyrénées-Orientales departmental council to “remind the fundamental importance of freedom of expression”

This Wednesday, January 8, 2025, on the occasion of ten years of the attack perpetrated against the editorial staff of Charlie Hebdo in , the Department and the Press Club will unveil an exhibition in dedicated to the work of French and international press cartoonists.

Ten years after the horror. Ten years after Cabu, Elsa Cayat, Charb, Honoré, Bernard Maris, Mustapha Ourrad, Tignous and Wolinski lost their lives in the line of duty. Ten years since the whole of was shaken. On January 7, 2015, the editorial staff of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo is attacked by the Kouachi brothers, two Islamist terrorists, with assault rifles. An attack which cost the lives of twelve people, including eight journalists and editorial cartoonists.

With their pencil strokes, press cartoonists invite us to awaken our consciences

On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of this sad anniversary, to pay tribute to them once again, to celebrate press cartoons and the cartoonists who are committed to defending freedom of expression, the Department of Pyrénées-Orientales, in partnership with the Occitanie press club, are offering a unique exhibition to discover from Wednesday January 8, 2025 within the departmental council.

For President Hermeline Malherbe, this exhibition aims to remind everyone “the fundamental importance of freedom of the press and freedom of expression”. “Reliable, independent and pluralistic information is the foundation of our democracy. With their pencil strokes, press cartoonists invite us to awaken our consciences with humor and irony. Very attached to the defense of freedom of expression, we We are committed to bringing it to life, particularly among young people. Learning, explaining and transmitting it is essential.

About forty drawings

Thus, the public will be able to discover 40 drawings, accompanied by texts which decipher the works of French and international press cartoonists: Angel Boligan (Mexico), Camille Besse, Gab; Elena Ospia (Colombia), Pascal Gros, Sié, Soulcié, Tignous, Willis from Tunis (Tunisia) and Wingz. Each of the ten panels in the exhibition addresses a particular theme celebrating drawing as an absolute weapon in the service of press freedom, with laughter and derision.

This Tuesday, November 7, a special issue of Charlie Hebdo printed in 300,000 copies will be on sale for two weeks announced Gérard Biard, the editor-in-chief of the satirical newspaper.
