A person is in police custody this Thursday, January 2 as part of an investigation opened for “manslaughter with a hit-and-run” after the accident which led to the death of Rayan Bezzari, a 15-year-old teenager, during the night of New Year in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), we learned from the prosecution.

“A police custody measure is underway as part of the open investigation into the charge of manslaughter with a hit-and-run” by the Strasbourg public prosecutor's office, he told AFP, confirming information from the regional daily “Les Dernieres Nouvelles d'Alsace”.

According to the newspaper, the man suspected of having driven the vehicle which hit the teenager in the sensitive district of the Cité de l'Ill surrendered to the authorities on Wednesday evening, around 10:30 p.m. It would be a 19-year-old man – he will be 20 in a few weeks – living in the neighborhood, according to “DNA”.

The events occurred around 1 a.m. on January 1, 2025, according to a police source. The teenager had just gotten out of a car after being taken home by a cousin, according to the news site Actu 17.

Rayan Bezzari was allegedly struck while walking on the road. Witnesses reportedly witnessed the incident. The victim was initially transported to hospital with a life-threatening condition, then she later died, added the police source.
