Several drivers arrested with high levels of alcohol during New Year's Eve

On the night of December 31 to January 1, the departmental road safety squadron carried out checks in Ariège. The police observed high alcohol levels among several drivers.

The gendarmes from the departmental road safety squadron were in action around Pamiers and Saverdun, so that New Year's Eve 2024 goes as smoothly as possible. They positioned themselves on the RD 820, the A66, the RD 919 and the RD 119 in order to carry out the usual checks.

In the first part of the evening, until 3 a.m. on January 1, the police noted “compliance with safety instructions. It was mainly families, with a high proportion of women driving.”

Things got worse in the second part of the evening, with men less concerned about protecting the lives of others. “Between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., with returns from , nine people had alcohol levels, including four showing high levels,” indicates the squadron.

Zigzags and very low speed

A driver was arrested after the gendarmes saw his vehicle zigzagging on the RD 119, between Pamiers and Mirepoix. The latter, after noticing a check being carried out, turned around, then took the RN 20. “We caught up with him easily, he was traveling at 60 km/h”. The man had the highest alcohol consumption detected during checks, i.e. 0.84 mg per liter of exhaled air.

Furthermore, out of the hundred vehicles stopped, driving under the influence of drugs and driving without insurance was noted.

The gendarmerie did not communicate the figures for its other sections in the Ariège territory, which were operating for the New Year.
