SENEGAL-PECHE-DPG / Illegal fishing: the PM announces “precautionary measures” – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Dec 27 (APS) – Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced Friday that “precautionary measures will be taken” against illegal fishing or the overexploitation of small pelagics.

”The sustainable fishing policy will be applied in all its dimensions and precautionary measures will be taken against illegal fishing or the overexploitation of small pelagics,” Mr. Sonko told the deputies, on the occasion of his Policy Declaration general (DPG).

He promised that ”the country’s maritime and river surveillance capacities will be strengthened to this end”.

The Prime Minister announced that the activity of fish meal and fish oil factories will be ”better supervised”.

He further indicated that modern and equipped disembarkation points will be set up along the entire coastline. They will complement the strengthening of value chain support services and the promotion of packaging and processing activities to modernize artisanal fishing.

Ousmane Sonko promised that fishing agreements will now preserve the interests of the State and those of our fishermen.

”It is within this framework that the government’s decision not to renew the fishing agreements with the European Union (EU) falls,” he explained.
