With nearly 1,800 convictions for “rape and other crimes of a sexual nature” in 2023, rape has become the leading criminal offense punished.
In 2023, 1,800 offenses of “rape and other crimes of a sexual nature” resulted in a conviction, making rape the first punishable criminal offense, according to a Justice Department report.
10% of rapes convicted in 2023 committed by the victim’s partner
Of the 2,900 criminal offenses sanctioned in 2023, 62% concerned rape and “for a little more than 7 out of 10 rape offenses, aggravating circumstances were used.”according to the study published Monday which specifies that 10% of rapes convicted in 2023 were committed by the victim’s spouse or partner.
In all, nearly 550,000 convictions were handed down in 2023, penalizing around 900,000 offenses recorded in the criminal record.
Criminal offenses (murder, rape, armed robbery or criminal violence) represent 0.3% of these offenses, far behind crimes (theft, violence, fraud, discrimination, sexual assault, manslaughter, etc.) which constitute 95 % of offenses punished and behind 5th class fines (speeding above 50 km/h for example) and their 4.5% of entries in the criminal record.
Road traffic for crimes
Regarding crimes, 36% of them concern road traffic, including driving while drunk, without a license or after suspension of a driving license.
According to the Ministry of Justice, prison sentences remain very significant with almost half of the main sentences handed down by all jurisdictions in 2023 (46%) and particularly in criminal matters where the prison sentence is pronounced in more than 9 out of 10 cases.
On the other hand, firm or suspended prison sentences concern a little less than half of the cases of convictions for misdemeanors, with an average duration of the firm part of the prison sentences handed down of 9.7 months.
Rape in the lead regarding convictions of minors
Regarding fines, they concern 36% of the sentences handed down in 2023, mainly to punish infractions.
Finally, according to the report, “29,700 convictions concerned minors at the time of the facts”all offenses combined.
In the event of the conviction of a minor for a crime, rape also tops the list of offenses.
