In Saint-Jean-du-, the question of school suspended from a meeting with National Education

Since December 5, parents of students have demonstrated, every opening day, in front of the town’s elementary school to protest against the announced closure of two classes in September 2025.

Towards a way out of a conflict that has lasted for almost a month?

On December 5, parents of students at the Saint-Jean-du- primary school launched a mobilization that is still ongoing today. Until the school holiday break, the latter occupied, every opening day, the entrance to the establishment to show their opposition to the announced closure of two classes at the start of the school year in September 2025: one in kindergarten , and another in elementary. Parents fear an overcrowding in the classes, the school having around a hundred pupils in elementary and 57 in nursery.

A monitored interview

Supported by the mayor, Pierre Aiguillon, as well as by the canton’s elected representative, Isabelle Fardoux-Jouve, the parents of students indicate that a first dialogue with National Education is planned for Friday January 10 with the assistant director academic of the national education services of Gard (DASEN), Christophe Mauny. This interview, according to one of his previous statements on this subject, would make it possible to better assess the situation of the school and these possible closures, while recalling, however, the drop in “4 000 fewer primary school pupils in Gard” since the 2010s.

Until then, parents plan to continue their occupation of the school entrance upon returning to class, Monday January 6, and even plan to “block the school if the response from DASEN is not satisfactory”.

At the same time, the parents of mobilized students also want to point out “insalubrity” prefabricated premises, still installed in the playground and used by the teams since the renovation of the school following the discovery of radon in the pipes.
