Travel just before New Year's Day could prove complicated: the end of December would reserve particularly active weather. Forecasts.

An end of the year in action

A large system, coming from Texas, is heading towards the province and would enter through the southwest gates during the weekend. It would not be easy: snow, rain, ice and a weather cocktail would be on the menu. Although it is still early, the system could leave accumulations in places. However, not everyone will be entitled to the same type of precipitation.

Rain for the south

The cold days are numbered: a rise in temperatures is on the horizon and will propel the mercury above the freezing point in several regions. Southern Quebec would be particularly affected by this mild spell: a maximum of 4°C is forecast for Sunday for Montreal and Sherbrooke. This mildness should therefore generate precipitation in the form of rain for the Greater Montreal, Estrie, Outaouais and Beauce regions. However, these regions would not be safe from a weather cocktail: the first showers could fall in the form of mixed rain, or even in the form of icy rain. The snow cover would therefore be threatened.

Snow for the north

Areas further north should get away with mostly snow. Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Gaspésie, the Capitale-Nationale region and the Côte- should mainly receive precipitation in solid form. However, the mild weather could still modify the nature of these showers at times. Remember that the maximums expected during the day on Sunday should peak around the freezing point in places, particularly in Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean and the Capitale-Nationale region.

And ice for everyone?

At first glance, the system could deposit ice in its path. It could even be one of the biggest episodes of black ice of the season: with the exception of the North Shore, most regions of Quebec would be affected by the risk and there is even talk of possible accumulations in places. .
