Snowboarder Sophie Hediger was swept away by an avalanche on Monday in Arosa (GR). The 26-year-old athlete, a member of the national snowboardcross team, died at the scene of the accident.

The young woman, accompanied by another skier, took a closed slope at 1:15 p.m., according to the press release from the Graubünden cantonal police, published Tuesday. As they left the closed slope, the snowboarder was caught in an avalanche.

The second skier alerted the emergency services and began looking for her. This was able to be located around 3:30 p.m. and finally cleared of snow masses. According to the cantonal police, resuscitation attempts on site had to be interrupted later without success. An investigation has been opened.

“We are stunned and we are thinking of Sophie’s family, to whom we offer our most sincere condolences,” declared Swiss-Ski CEO Walter Reusser, quoted in a press release. “For the Swiss-Ski family, Sophie’s tragic death casts a dark shadow over the Christmas holidays. We are immensely sad. We will keep fond memories of Sophie,” he continues.

Sophie Hediger obtained her first two World Cup podiums during the 2023-2024 financial year, her best result being a 2nd place in St-Moritz last January during the dress rehearsal for the 2025 Worlds.
