Swiss Alps: start of vacation rhymes with avalanche danger

The marvelous landscape discovered by many holidaymakers in the mountains should not make us forget the snowy danger. The avalanche danger is rated 4 (strong) this Tuesday “at all exposures above 1800m”, indicates the SLF, the Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanches. “With a lot of fresh snow in Valais and on the northern slopes of the Alps as well as a strong to stormy wind from the west to the north, very widespread and sometimes large-scale accumulations of blown snow are forming,” he notes. .

In summary, “the conditions for snow sports outside of secure slopes are very critical”. The danger is particularly strong in Valais and in the Alps of central Switzerland. On the Vaudois and Bernese Alps side, the danger is rated 3+ (marked), the same on the Jura side.

The situation should slowly improve, according to the SLF. “Wednesday and Thursday the weather will be generally sunny in the mountains. The wind will be moderate on Wednesday and it will decrease on Thursday. The temperature will increase significantly. On Thursday, the zero degree isotherm will be around 3000 m. The danger of dry snow avalanches will slowly decrease,” he notes.
