The Ukrainian battlefields have become the unexpected scene of a surprising alliance. Persistent rumors circulate, supported by chilling figures, about the presence of soldiers from Asia.
While the Kremlin cultivates opacity about its alliances, precise reports are emerging from the South. They highlight a little-known chapter of the conflict: the direct engagement of foreign troops on the deadliest fronts.
War in Ukraine: unexpected support from North Korea to Russia
Since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, military alliances have been reshaping themselves. If Moscow has always sought international support, the appearance of North Korea on the Ukrainian scene intrigues observers. According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, as of December 23, 2024 (JCS), more than 1,000 North Korean soldiers have already been killed or injured on the ground. Data which suggests that Pyongyang now goes far beyond the role of a simple arms supplier.
Relations between North Korea and Russia are not new, but they seem to have taken on a new dimension. The two countries signed a mutual defense treaty in June 2024 providing for immediate military assistance in the event of aggression. This strategic partnership could explain why Pyongyang now supplies kamikaze drones and rocket launchers to its Russian ally. For the JCS, this support is not only aimed at helping Moscow, but also at perfecting North Korean military capabilities.
Massive human losses and strategic consequences
Despite the impressive figures, the Kremlin remains silent on the involvement of these foreign troops. Ukraine, on the other hand, confirms that North Korean units are deployed in sensitive areas, notably in the Kursk region. These battalions, although inexperienced, suffered heavy losses against the Ukrainian forces. But for Pyongyang, these battles could serve as a training ground to modernize its military and increase its regional threat, particularly against South Korea.
The use of North Korean troops raises concerns about the evolution of modern conflicts. In the short term, this alliance gives Russia valuable support, but in the long term it could destabilize Northeast Asia. South Korea is following these developments closely, fearing that these war experiences will fuel an increased threat on its borders.
