Danty still resents the Springboks

More than a year after the World Cup quarter-final lost by the French XV against South Africa, Jonathan Danty still holds a grudge against the Springboks.

Pieter Steph du Toit, voted best player in the world in 2024, is a global reference in the 3rd line position. However, despite the respect he may arouse, Jonathan Danty will refuse to drink a beer with the South African even in ten years. “No” the three-quarter center of responded curtly to this hypothesis to our colleagues from Rama. Guilty of a dangerous clean-up on the Frenchman during a friendly match in 2022, the Springbok did it again during the quarter-final of the World Cup, which was fatal to the French XV in 2023. Without being excluded this time, however. Nor even sanctioned.

“The first time he sent me a message to apologize. But it's true that the second time I found it surprising that it was a fairly similar action. I would like to be potentially capable of scratching balloons, but scratching balls one meter from the ruck is a bit complicated” regretted the number 12 of the Blues. “It's unfair but beyond this action I think it's for the entire match… Because I'm looking at the big screen at that moment and they're typing very quickly, it's going very, very quickly. But I think it deserved to be revisited” dissected the Rochelais, bitter at the leniency from which the world champions were able to benefit.

Etzebeth also in Danty’s crosshairs

“I recently saw on the networks that Eben (Etzebeth, editor’s note) had reposted a video of his goalkeeping save saying that the ball was going backwards” also recalled Jonathan Danty, an ironic smile on his lips regarding an anti-playing fault from the South African 2nd row strangely forgotten by the match referee. “It's bad memories (sic), things that remain in a negative way, but it's also part of the failures that allow you to build yourself and become bigger.” In addition to the trauma of elimination in the quarterfinals, Jonathan Danty lost his place in the French XV a year later, supplanted during the November tour this year by Yoram Moefana and Emilien Gailleton.
