“No injuries, it’s a miracle”. The day after a crane fell on the Les Jardins de Bastia residence, in the Annonciade district, emergency services were on site to secure the area on Monday, December 23. The company assigned to remove the piece of crane blocking traffic was in place around 2 p.m. “When it fell, the machine hit the veranda of an apartment on the top floor. No one was injured, it was incredible luck,” one of the firefighters slides at the foot of the building on which one end of the crane still rests.
A project in two stages
On the afternoon program: the first phase of the construction site. “After securing, restoring circulation remains the priorityconfirm the services of the Haute-Corse prefecture. So we start by removing the piece of the machine that is spread out on the road.” Part of the crane, leaning on the residence, was also removed. In all, the project took several hours to be completed in the early evening.
The second phase, more dangerous, should take place within a few weeks. It involves sawing and removing most of the crane, which has crashed into the building under construction, the future Bastia Grand Parc residence.
“I have every confidence in the masonry company”
As for the causes of the accident, the promoter mentions the violent winds which occurred this Sunday evening. “According to what was explained to me, in the Fango valley, there is a phenomenon of two-way gusts. This could have caused the accident, indique José-Paul Malpelli. I have complete confidence in the masonry company I work with. The expert also came to carry out a check this morning, and he found nothing abnormal about the machine itself or the way in which it had been installed. Whatever happens, the important thing is that there were no injuries.”
