The composition of the new French government was announced this Monday shortly after 6:30 p.m., the epilogue of ten days of negotiations between Prime Minister François Bayrou and President Emmanuel Macron.

Two former prime ministers, Élisabeth Borne and Manuel Valls, will respectively head the Ministry of Education and that of Overseas Territories.

Gérald Darmanin is appointed Minister of State in charge of Justice, while the Ministry of the Economy falls to Eric Lombard, the current director of the Caisse des Dépôts. Bruno Retailleau is reappointed to the Interior, Jean-Noël Barrot to Foreign Affairs, Sébastien Lecornu to the Armed Forces and Rachida Dati to Culture. Catherine Vautrin, for her part, returns to the head of a large Ministry of Health, Labor, Solidarity and Families.

Former socialist minister François Rebsamen is appointed minister of regional planning and decentralization in the new government of François Bayrou.

Political instability

François Bayrou, aged 73, was appointed by Emmanuel Macron after lengthy consultations to find a successor to the conservative Michel Barnier, whose minority government was overthrown on December 4 by deputies from the left and far right after only three months in office.

François Bayrou is the sixth head of government since Emmanuel Macron's first election in 2017 and the fourth in 2024, an instability that has not experienced for decades.

The first Council of Ministers of the Bayrou government will be held on January 3.
