The famous Badhütte in Rorschach (SG) was destroyed by fire early Monday morning. This century-old bathing hut on Lake Constance was already completely ablaze when the intervention forces arrived. For the authorities this is a “huge loss”.

Intervening in large numbers, the firefighters managed to contain the flames, but the Badhütte was completely destroyed, the Saint Gallen police said in a press release.

Extinguishing the embers was not easy and continued into the afternoon, because the cabin was built on stilts in the lake and surrounded by scaffolding. The firefighters had to set up a floating platform.

The building had to be secured to allow experts to enter to determine the causes of the disaster, the spokesperson told Keystone-ATS. It was still unclear Monday whether there was a link between the construction work on the cabin and the fire.

Reconstruction planned

The alarm was raised at 3:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived on the scene, the venerable building was already completely on fire. No injuries were reported.

Rorschach Mayor Robert Rath (PLR) indicated that this unique building will be rebuilt. It is an original construction, specific to the architecture of the 1920s, easily identifiable, a mixture of wood and modern techniques, described as “exemplary” and placed under heritage protection by the canton of Thurgau.

It housed two interior pools and was a very popular monument in the region, with its vast roof. “A huge and irreparable loss,” lamented the authorities.
