According to the City of Carcassonne, work on the Carmelite convent, rehabilitated as a tourist office, should take place in the last quarter of 2025. But the first developments have already started according to community services.
During an interview given to L'Indépendant on January 11, 2024, the mayor of Carcassonne, Gérard Larrat, spoke about the work at the Carmelite convent located on rue du Pont Vieux. Indeed, this abandoned place must be transformed into a tourist office, but also into a tourist reception center, as mentioned by the first magistrate of the prefectural city.
The first shovels were planned for November 2024 but a delay disrupted the schedule. “It's not our responsibility.”entrust the community services. And to add: “Work has already been carried out, particularly on the roof of the convent. We have also determined the firm which will be the contracting authority.” Regarding the official start of work, the City specifies that it will be necessary to wait until the last quarter of 2025.
As part of the Large Sites operation
As a reminder, this project is not new. It is the result of a merger of the two tourist offices for the benefit of one entity: that of Carcassonne, known as “municipal” (itself split into two entities, Bastide and Cité); and that of the Agglo, says “Greater Carcassonne”. This idea will be carried out in particular as part of the Large Sites operation and as a continuation of the requalification of Rue du Pont Vieux.
