Switzerland: recall of “Dubai chocolate”, dangerous for health

With its extraordinary taste and texture, “Dubai chocolate” has been a hit on social networks for about a year. And Switzerland is no exception to this craze. Recently, a man was even arrested at the German border with 45 kilos of this brown gold which he wanted to import into Switzerland, where the plate sells for the modest sum of 14.95 francs. at Lindt & Sprüngli.

Unfortunately, recent research has shown that many samples of the famous chocolate pose health risks. In Switzerland, the product, distributed by Spar, was the subject of a recall on Monday.

Recent analyzes carried out by several German laboratories on Dubai chocolate presented impressive results, our colleagues from “20 Minuten” tell us. Impurities dangerous to health, undeclared allergens, misleading labeling: all the samples had defects.

Spar is therefore now recalling the “Orient Delight Dubai Chocolate 200g”, due to too high a mycotoxin content. The company specifies that customers are asked to no longer consume this product, since there is indeed a health risk. The affected chocolate can be returned to any Spar or TopCC store. The sale price will be refunded.

What are mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins are toxic products produced by certain molds and which can be present in foodstuffs, particularly when they have been stored in humid or inappropriate conditions.

With acute exposure, mycotoxins can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Long-term ingestion, even in small quantities, poses a risk of liver and kidney damage.
