The tragedy occurred this Monday, December 23, 2024 in the Saint-Assiscle district of Perpignan.
The Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters were called to intervene on several occasions for falling materials or branches caused by the tramontane gusts which have been blowing across the department since Sunday. Unfortunately, they were unable to do anything when the alert was given this Monday at the beginning of the afternoon in the Saint-Assiscle district of Perpignan. According to initial information, a tree collapsed to the ground and fell on a man who was sleeping in the street on a piece of cardboard. When help arrived, the victim, aged 65, had died, probably from his injuries.
A friend of the deceased man, who lives a few steps from the scene of the tragedy, is still in shock. “Manuel has been coming to Perpignan regularly for several years,” he testifies. “He arrived a few days ago and I suggested that he take shelter in my caravan. But he didn't want to. Because he listened to his transistor radio all the time and he said that he He could hear better outside. It's sad to die like that.”
Also at midday, in Perpignan again, another tree collapsed on a car. The driver, aged 60, alone on board, was slightly injured and transported to the hospital by firefighters.
Please note that all parks in the city of Perpignan are closed to the public, by municipal decree taken systematically when winds exceed 80 km/h.
