Will we one day know the exact human toll of the passage of Cyclone Chido on Mayotte? ? Eight days after the disaster, the figures, still provisional, show 35 deaths and 2 500 injured. It is the most devastating cyclone on the archipelago in 90 years.
This Monday, by decision of the President of the Republic, all the country's tricolor flags were lowered to half-mast at the end of the morning and the French were invited to reflect during a minute of silence.
This day of national mourning gave rise in many municipalities of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to official ceremonies and times of contemplation.
In Nice, the entire municipal council met at 11 a.m. in the courtyard of the Town Hall with representatives of the Mahorese community.
In Cannes or in Saint-Raphaël, a ceremony was planned at the same time at the foot of the war memorial in front of the Town Hall.
This time of homage was observed by all the municipalities, which lowered their tricolor flag to half-mast:

Eight days after the disaster, the call for donations to help the victims continues.
Since the start of the Fifth Republic in 1958, days of national mourning have been very rare, there have only been around ten. First reserved for the death of Presidents of the Republic, national mourning was then decided several times for the victims of terrorist attacks. In 2016, an exceptional three-day national mourning was declared the day after the July 14 attack in Nice. This Monday, December 23, is the first time, under the Fifth Republic, that this measure has been taken to honor the victims of a climatic catastrophe.
