The grouping led by CMA CGM, a global player in maritime, land, air and logistics solutions (67%), with Banque des Territoires (23%), CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Étienne Roanne (4%), and CCI métropole Aix-Marseille-Provence (4%) is named winner by the CNR of a sub-concession to operate and develop the container terminal at Port Édouard Herriot de Lyon, for a period of 30 years.
The project mainly aims to develop river and rail traffic on the Mediterranean Rhône Saône Axis, via the port facilities of the port of Marseille, by modernizing the infrastructure, developing new services and encouraging modal shift. CMA CGM and its partners aim to develop modal shift, to open the terminal to all shipping companies, river and rail operators and offer competitive, fluid and carbon-free solutions.
Significant investments for optimal productivity and quality of service
The port of Lyon Édouard Herriot will benefit from major investments amounting to around 40 million euros in order to increase its capacity and modernize its infrastructure to include innovative river, rail and road transport solutions. These investments include terminal extension work, modernization of existing infrastructure, creation of new railway tracks, planned switch to electric handling equipment, IT and operational modernization and sustainable development of the terminal. From 2028, the terminal will be able to accommodate a total of 230,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).
Thanks to its strategic position in the heart of the city and at the crossroads of European and international trade, the port of Lyon Édouard Herriot represents an essential link in the region's logistics chain. By 2032, the group plans to double the river traffic handled at the terminal, linking the Rhône Alpes region to the port of Marseille and coming from all types of river operators or maritime carriers.
With 57 port terminals operated in 28 countries, the CMA CGM Group is a global player in the logistics and port chain. In France, the Group has 20,000 employees present across terminals in several key port infrastructures in Le Havre, Fos-sur-Mer, Marseille, Montoir de Bretagne and Dunkirk.
Emmanuel Delachambre, Vice-President in charge of terminals within the CMA CGM Group, specifies: “This project reflects our ambition alongside our partners to modernize and strengthen the strategic role of the port of Lyon Édouard Herriot, thanks to sustainable logistics solutions and by developing modal shift mainly from the port of Marseille Fos, and for the benefit regional, national and international economic actors.

The 170,000 companies in the large Lyon-Saint-Etienne urban area need modern and efficient transport infrastructure to develop their activities in France and abroad. Decarbonization, fluidity of trade, growth of multimodal, strengthening of the Lyon-Marseille axis and the Lyon-Northern Europe rail axis will be major benefits. With this project, our ambition is also for companies to reclaim the river, the carbon-free means of transport par excellence! To date, river transport represents only 5% of traffic. The ambition is to double by 2032! »
Jean-Luc Chauvin, President of the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolitan CCI, underlines: “The awarding of the subconcession of the container terminals of Port Édouard Herriot de Lyon to our group illustrates our common ambition to modernize this strategic axis with the creation of a container terminal meeting international standards, under the management of the world leader in sector. This project illustrates the strength of the public-private alliance in the development of our territories. It opens new perspectives for the 146,000 businesses in Aix-Marseille-Provence, strengthening their competitiveness on a European scale. The CCIAMP is proud to contribute to this synergy between our metropolises, combining public expertise and private efficiency for sustainable and efficient logistics. »
