A week after the passage of the devastating cyclone Chido, Bruno Retailleau promised the imminent return of running water for the inhabitants of Mayotte. “As of the end of this weekend, 90% of the population will be connected to running water, two days out of three for eight hours via what we call water towers,” declared the resigned minister of Interior in an interview with Sunday Journal.
This restoration will take place “at the latest tomorrow morning,” said the resigning Minister of Overseas Affairs François-Noël Buffet, on RTL, this Sunday. “We are currently able to check in the municipalities whether the water is reaching all the pipes and all the homes,” he added.
A container ship must deliver 1.6 million liters of water
Although emergency aid is still awaited in several places, water has been distributed in Mamoudzou and many residents have returned home with a pack of bottles, an AFP journalist noted on Saturday morning. Water is also back on the tap, even if the water towers will continue until December 27 to manage the shortage in this territory where the temperature exceeds 30°C. A container ship from the CMA-CGM company is due to deliver 1.6 million liters of water on Sunday, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.
