The project is gargantuan. Since 2019, the work which will constitute the new Rennes University Hospital has been progressing well and the steps become clearer. After the construction of the future surgical and interventional center (CCI) which will open in 2025it's the turn of thewoman-mother-child hospital (FME) to get started. A large-scale project, spread over eight levels and with 40,000 m² surface areawhich will see the light of day by 2028 and whose preliminary work for its construction began this year. Three phases of development

To carry out the construction of the new Cité de la santé, several operations are divided into three phases, between 2019 and 2029:
– Phase 1: construction of a surgical and interventional center (CCI), a hotel and advanced logistics platform (PLH/A), a tertiary building, construction of the woman-mother-child hospital (FME), modernization of the adult emergency-resuscitation center and construction of a regional cancer institute (IRC);
– Phase 2: rehabilitation of existing buildings into ambulatory platforms and construction of medical hospitalization buildings;
– Phase 3: construction of a biology institute and a pharmacy center.

The total cost of the construction of the new maternity ward amounts to 149,988,285 euros excluding tax (design-construction contract signed in January 2024) or 233 million euros in final value.

The maternity ward will bring together “ all medical activitiesTHE EMERGENCIES and the critical care dedicated to the woman, the mother, the couple and the child,” indicates the Rennes University Hospital.

In total, the woman-mother-child hospital will accommodate 313 beds and places. The large building will be arranged in a modular manner with eight stories among which we will find:

  • At level -1: pediatric emergencies and imaging;
  • On the ground floor : consultations, conviviality space, changing rooms;
  • On the 1st floor: pediatric critical care, pediatric outpatient care as well as staff space;
  • On the 2nd floor : neonatology, gyneco-obstetric emergencies, hospitalization of high-risk pregnancies (GHR), on-call hotel;
  • On the 3rd floor : also neonatology, hospitalization following births, the lactarium (center for collection, processing and distribution of breast milk);
  • On the 4th floor : the gynecological outpatient center and the staff area;
  • On the 5th floor : hospitalization in pediatrics;
  • On the 6th floor : pediatric onco-hospitalization.

The reception hall will be bright, far from “traditional hospital stereotypes” specifies the Rennes University Hospital.

The building is designed as a reassuring place in which natural light and plants play a therapeutic role.

Family rooms, outdoor spaces…

The hospital will also be equipped with family rooms, integrated outdoor spaces to the building, places dedicated to parents and children or even lounges reserved for familiesand spaces for the siblings.

More beds and places

To respond to demographic changes, the new maternity ward will have more beds and places, including:

  • 100 beds reserved for medical-surgical hospitalizationand pediatric critical care compared to 82 beds currently at the South Hospital;
  • Consultation rooms and maintenance offices in consultations gyneco-obstetrics will pass from 15 to 27 ;
  • 22 obstetrics outpatient places against 18 currently;
  • 13 birthing rooms,including one physiological, instead of 12.

The maternity unit plans to carry out, in projections per year, 4,000 deliveriesto see pass 20,000 patients in gyneco-obstetric emergencieset 55,000 patients in pediatric emergencies.

In 202335,037 visits were recorded to pediatric emergencies; 17,333 visits to gyneco-obstetric emergencies; 3,704 deliveries.

Access

The new maternity ward will be bordered by the hospital block, the dental care center, the surgical and interventional center as well as the emergency and resuscitation center.

To get there, a new access and circulation planwill be created by 2028. Cars, bicycles, pedestrians, ambulances… All types of mobility will have been thought of.

To take into account new parking needs, two “superstructure” car parks will be built: one for health professionals, the other for users.

The number of places was estimated at 900 additional places for professionals and 600 places for users of the Pontchaillou site.

Pour cyclists,the number of parking spaces will increase from 650 in 2022 tomore than 1,000 places availableonce the maternity unit is put into service.
