While, in most municipalities, mayors present their wishes in January, that of Cormelles-le-Royal in the Caen area (Calvados) has already done it! Friday December 20, 2025, he welcomed the Cormellois and some personalities to the ceremony organized by the municipality, the time for a speech appreciated for “his frankness and his humanity”, we noted in the room.

Why so early?

But why is the Cormel mayor presenting his wishes to the population in December? Sophie Oblin-Pommier, deputy mayor and daughter of Bernard Oblin, mayor of Cormelles-le-Royal from 1983 to 2014, remembers. » My father always presented his wishes in December. He particularly had a thought for the deceased of the past year. Organizing this ceremony in December allowed, and still allows, to integrate it into other Cormell festive events : the distribution of Christmas packages to elders, the show and treats offered to the town's children… And there is less risk of choosing the same date as a neighboring town. »

Michel Lemoine, deputy mayor at the time, added to Liberté Caen that “this ceremony of wishes already took place in December before 1983during the time of Charles Auvray, mayor since 1971. “

“In January, we turned the page”

Jean-Marie Guillemin joins the discussion. » During my first mandate, from 2014 to 2020, the question arose of moving the ceremony to January. But the arguments are in favor of December. Those mentioned just now with additional activities: the delicacies of the twinning committees on the square, the specific activities of the media library and the Cormel'lien space. » He continues:

I would add that in January, we turned the page, the new year has already started, we are looking ahead.

The landscaped cemetery will gain 8,000 m²

Let's look ahead, then. Three projects were mentioned by the mayor in his speech. The extension of the cemetery plans to double its surface area and number of locations. It will therefore extend over 16,000 m² for 1,200 pitches in a similar landscaped environment. » The administrative phase of the project is completed. We are soon entering the construction phase. If all goes well, we will inaugurate the extension at the end of 2025.”

A nursery in the activity zone

In September 2025, a Little Frogs private nursery will open in the Jean Mantelet space. Covering 530 m², it will offer 33 cradles for children aged 10 weeks to 4 years. Balanced meals, prepared with the assistance of a dietitian, will be cooked on site using fresh, local products. Hygiene products and organic diapers will be provided by the crèche. Outside, on 185 m², there is a natural lawn, a playground and a vegetable garden.

A cultural space for festive evenings

Finally, the construction of the cultural and multi-purpose space a stone's throw from the ring road will take place over 2025 and 2026. As the Orée du Bois room is forced to remain silent after 10 p.m., the city has decided to build a new space for parties and shows “more modern, more energy efficient and above all far from homes”. It will consist of a large room for 300 people with retractable stands, a small room for 60, a kitchen and a terrace.
