In the 32nd finals of the Coupe de France, Lorient had to face Tours, a R1 club coached by Bryan Bergougnoux, the former Lyon player who recovered from cancer. A match ultimately canceled for security reasons.
Having become leader of Ligue 2 last weekend by overtaking Paris FC, which it beat at its Moustoir venue (2-0), FC Lorient is aiming for a good run in the Coupe de France. After eliminating Ruffiac Malestroit (2-0) and Monnaie (5-0), the Breton club is preparing to face Tours (R1) in the 32nd finals, Saturday (6:00 p.m.), or rather was preparing, because the match was was finally canceled at midday for security reasons. In the opposite camp will be an old acquaintance from Ligue 1: Bryan Bergougnoux. Parotid cancer diagnosed at the end of 2023
The ex-attacking midfielder still enjoys Football, the common thread of his life, having suffered from cancer. From which he fortunately recovered. He was diagnosed with this damn parotid (salivary gland) cancer at the end of 2023 and there were obviously some delicate moments. “It’s behind me. Of course, we still need control, but I feel completely healed, confides in Ouest-France Bergougnoux, triple French champion with OL (2002, 2004, 2005) and player in 409 professional matches. Obviously, it's a fragile thing so it could come back at any time, but I don't want to come back to that again. I never felt sick, although I know I was a little… I just want to talk about football. »
Bergougnoux: “Football has always been my best medicine”
This football fanatic is too happy to always be immersed in the environment to look in the retro. “Even in my bad times during my career, it was football that kept me going. It's my family and football. There is nothing else otherwise. Besides, when I was going through the illness, I admit that I didn't even have time to think about the fact that I was sick. I had surgery and 4 days later, I was on the bench for a Coupe de France match that I wanted to win. I could have stayed at home but, in fact, I would have thought about illness… In fact, football has always been my best remedy,” admits Bergougnoux, former coach of Evian Thonon Grand Genève, who, although coach in R1, retains the involvement of a professionally trained technician. This weekend, he intended to play a bad trick on Merlus and create a sensation at the Stade de la Vallée du Cher.
