After the Magdeburg attack, the Christmas market placed under close surveillance

A very important safety feature. While a car-ramming attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg in Germany left five people dead, including a child, on Friday December 20, surveillance was reinforced on the Strasbourg market.

Each bag is searched and the police must systematically stop the few cars authorized to enter the site to inspect them, reports franceinfo. Questioned by the radio, some visitors say more “reassured” and appreciate that “everyone be checked ».

1,000 agents secure the Strasbourg market

This attack brought back traumatic memories of the attack on the Strasbourg Christmas market in December 2018, which left five people dead and eleven injured. At the microphone of our colleagues, a trader confided that she was always anxious when opening her chalet. “We wonder when it will stop. Every year, we put more and more security in place. We realize that this doesn’t prevent anything”she said.

The Strasbourg market will remain under close surveillance until the end of the festivities, in particular thanks to barriers installed on the outskirts of the city center and cameras which control access. More than 1,000 agents, including 400 gendarmes and CRS, ensure market security.
