At rue Grenette, the corner of Quai Saint Antoine has almost returned to normal life – Photos DR Lyon People
Text: Marco Polisson – Pleasant surprise this morning for the inhabitants of the Presqu'ile. When they woke up, they noticed that the no-entry signs had disappeared at the entrances to rue Grenette.
In front of Café Grenette, only the large concrete blocks remain at the corner of Quai Saint Antoine. Ditto at the corner of rue Édouard Herriot, near the Grand Café des Négociants. The prohibition signs have magically disappeared on this vital artery, the closure of which has triggered an unprecedented wave of protest.
Is this a gift from environmentalists for the Christmas holidays?
One might think so as the protests have risen a notch in recent weeks in the face of the thrombosis which is paralyzing Lyon and the monster traffic jams which are even reaching neighboring towns. The Christmas period is crucial for traders on the peninsula whose turnover has fallen by 30% since the closure of the peninsula.
Have the green elected officials finally taken stock of the catastrophe?
For several days, in the press which is subservient to them, the Khmer Greens have been multiplying messages of appeasement so as not to compromise their chances of re-election in 2026. It is with this in mind – totally hypocritical – that they have decided to suspend for the holidays work on avenue des Frères Lumière.
Aware that continuing to ruin the lives of the Lyonnais could cost them dearly, the ephemeral Gregory Doucet and the president of the ecologist Metropolis Bruno Bernard have decreed, with heartbreak, the postponement of work on the new bicycle highways until after 2026.
Electoral decisions which fool no one and which will undoubtedly anger the bicycle Taliban. We will know in the coming days what the situation really is for rue Grenette.
