The Montpellier Metropolis unveiled this Friday December 20, 2024 the results of one year of free public transport. According to the data communicated, the network recorded an increase in attendance of 33 % in 2024 compared to 2019, the reference year before the pandemic. Michaël Delafosse, president of the Metropolis, welcomed these figures, stating: “We will thus exceed 110 million trips, compared to 84 million in 2019.”
Detailed figures show growth of 24 % in the first quarter and 28% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same periods in 2019. Beyond peak hours, a notable increase was also noted during off-peak hours. “These figures reflect more diversified uses: leisure, sociability, and many other reasons,” indicated the Metropolis. On November 15, a record was reached with 510,715 travelers transported in a single day. Of the 510,000 inhabitants of the metropolis, 407,000 have activated their “Free Pass”, i.e. almost 80 % of the population.
Projects to expand the network
The dynamic doesn't stop there. Michaël Delafosse recalled the entry into service scheduled for December 20, 2025 of the fifth tram line. This will connect the north and west of the territory in 45 minutes, with an expected attendance of 80,000 travelers per day. Furthermore, the extension of line 1 will, in less than a year, connect the Sud de France station to the Odysseum shopping center.
