This Wednesday, December 18, the basketball match between Nanterre 92 and the Israeli club Hapoël Holon was interrupted by pro-Palestinian activists who brandished flags. A symbolic action, which aims to denounce the genocide, has been going on for more than fifteen months now, but which ended with seven activists being sent to court, two of whom were in immediate appearance.
After being beaten up by Israeli supporters – who walked out free – the activists who waved Palestinian flags were violently arrested by the police and placed in police custody. 48 hours of police custody later, seven activists were referred to the Nanterre Judicial Court. For several of them, the Prosecutor only intended to dismiss the case under conditions, i.e. a procedure which did not require referring them to court.
For Maître Louisa Lamour, their lawyer: “ It is a totally scandalous method of intimidation to go through a dismissal for such facts which result in conditional classifications. » Two activists were brought into immediate appearance and were released this Friday evening under judicial supervision while awaiting their trial.
This scandalous repression is part of a vast policy of criminalization of any voice denouncing the genocidal policy of the State of Israel. These arrests also come a few weeks after the France-Israel match at the Stade de France where Macron and his political staff went while deploying an extraordinary repressive system and banning Palestinian flags.
An exceptional treatment which contrasts greatly with the impunity enjoyed by those supporting the ongoing massacre. Less than two weeks ago, an armed man who had threatened demonstrators during a demonstration in support of the Palestinian people was released two days later under judicial supervision.
While supporters of the genocide are becoming more and more uninhibited and the criminalization of support for Palestine is deepening, we must build a broad movement of solidarity with those repressed and demand the dropping of charges for activists arrested this Wednesday but also for all those prosecuted for having denounced the genocide.
