From campaign promise to fruition, a look back at five years leading to the rebirth of Cujas Square

The campaign promise

In the center of the city, in the center of the 2020 municipal elections. Beating heart of the city, hosting in turn the Carmelite order and a church destroyed in 1878, then the School of Fine Arts dismantled in 1976, and finally a parking lot , Cujas quickly established itself as “the stronghold of the campaign” headlined the Republican Berry of January 25, 2020. All the candidates agree on the need to evolve the space. The outgoing mayor, Pascal Blanc, imagines a living space where a covered car park would nestle, making use of the slope of the site. Philippe Mousny talks about his desire for “an evolution, not a revolution”, without saying yet that he is thinking of a village square with overhead parking.

Irène Félix dreams of “a large green space”. The outline sketched out by Yann Galut looks like two drops of water to the project of Irène Félix, opponent of the first round who became an ally in the second. A month after his official entry into the race for city hall, Yann Galut floats the idea of “a green lung” and the conservation “on the upper part, of around fifty parking spaces” out of the 200 existing. More greenery, fewer cars. In meetings, on leaflets, the argument is hammered out. Yann Galut goes green at the polls on June 28, 2020. Nothing can stop Cujas from changing.

The first milestone and opposition

July 3, 2020. Installation day of the municipal council. The moment chosen by Yann Galut to, from the outset, set the pace for what Cujas will be in the future. From summer 2020, the square, although still tarmac, will vibrate, not to the rhythm of jackhammers and mechanical excavators, but to that of summer activities. The first administrative foundation for the renewal of Place Cujas was laid on March 18, 2021, with the vote, during an extraordinary municipal council, of a deliberation launching the requalification procedure. “A historic moment” according to all components of the municipal majority.
