The new CHRU is revealed

It was a particularly anticipated moment which took place on Friday December 20; after long months of waiting, the name of the architectural firm which will manage the construction of the new CHRU has been revealed. This is the Parisian agency Michel Associés, specialized in the hospital environment. The signing of the project management contract took place within the Louis Mathieu Institute, in the presence of Arnaud Vanneste, general director of the Nancy hospital center, Mathieu Klein, president of the Métropole du Grand Nancy, and the architect Michel Beauvais. A symbolic gesture which marks an important step in this major operation, “undoubtedly the largest investment to come in the territory of the Greater Nancy metropolis for the decade 2020-2030”, as Mathieu Klein underlined. Amount of the invoice: 785 million euros excluding tax excluding equipment for an area of approximately 144,000 square meters.

The project for the new Nancy CHRU will bring together on the Brabois site the medical activities of the hospital center, currently spread over seven sites in the metropolis (the Central hospital, the Saint-Julien maternity hospital, the Emile-Gallé center , the Saint-Stanislas long-stay center and the dental center). In detail, it will consist of three new buildings, linked to the Louis Mathieu Institute (cardio medico-surgical center) and the Philippe Canton Medical Specialties Building (BSM), to which new energy infrastructures will be added. With the primary objective of improving the organization of care provision, a problem which “increased during the health crisis”, recalled Marc Debouverie, president of the establishment medical commission of the Nancy CHRU.

Delivery planned for 2031

Thus, the bulk of the work lies in the reconstruction of the medical-technical building (BMT). The latter will bring together 34 operating theaters and will accommodate SAMU-SMUR services, adult emergencies, critical care, among others. The three new buildings will house women, mothers and children, one, a technical platform, and a hospitalization center. The flows are also being redesigned and these five major centers will be interconnected by a central island, which will constitute an essential part of the redeployment of the new hospital. The current children's hospital will be renovated to accommodate administrative services. At the same time, an “emergency street” will be created on the north side, separate from logistics and visitor routes. The emblematic bar of the adult hospital will be demagnetized and demolished, at a cost estimated at 22 million euros. Ultimately, the hospital center will have a capacity of 1,495 beds and 192 outpatient places.

According to the schedule presented, the bulk of the work should take place over the period 2027-2030 for a gradual installation of the various services during the year 2031. Since the summer, the preliminary projects on the Brabois hospital site have started and around ten preliminary operations (roads and networks, parking, creation of a new boiler room, etc.) will take place until 2026.

Who from the Central Hospital?

This grouping also raises the question of maintaining the presence of a local healthcare offer in the city center. In this desire, the Central hospital is not destined to disappear completely and medical activity will be maintained there, assures Mathieu Klein. “We are working on maintaining an outpatient facility, in conjunction with other partners,” explains the elected official. This unit will be supplemented by a range of services such as a specialized consultation center, a multidisciplinary health center and an immediate care medical center (CMSI), adds Marc Debouverie. Details which, however, still need to be “refined”.
